Commemoration Ceremony of Eid Ghadir and the 37th Anniversary of the Passing of Imam Khomeini (RA)

A ceremony commemorating Eid al-Ghadir and the 37th anniversary of the passing of Imam Khomeini (RA), entitled “Imam Ali’s Justice and the Characteristics of the Ideal Government in Imam Khomeini’s Thought,” was held on 4 June 2026 at the National Film Corporation Auditorium in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The event was attended by scholars, academics, cultural and religious figures, diplomats, and individuals interested in Islamic thought and the legacy of Imam Khomeini (RA).

At the beginning of the ceremony, the Cultural Counselor of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran welcomed the participants and highlighted the profound connection between the Event of Ghadir Khumm and the movement of Imam Khomeini (RA). He described Ghadir as a pivotal moment in the continuation of divine leadership and justice within Islamic society.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Alireza Delkhosh, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Sri Lanka, referred to Imam Khomeini’s historic role in reviving Islamic thought and the teachings of Imam Ali (AS). He emphasized that Imam Khomeini’s movement was inspired by the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the Alavid tradition, and was founded upon justice, opposition to oppression, and support for the right of nations to determine their own destiny. He also underscored the importance of justice, respect for national sovereignty, and support for oppressed peoples.

Mr. Adam Masnavi Jafar Sadiq, a distinguished diplomat and former Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Brazil and the Maldives, discussed the leadership and personality of Imam Khomeini (RA), while elaborating on the significance of Ghadir Khumm and the prominent position of Imam Ali (AS) in Islamic history. He further highlighted the role of faith, spirituality, and popular support in the success of the Islamic Revolution of Iran.

Another speaker at the event was Mr. Lafir Madani, Islamic scholar, author, translator of Nahj al-Balagha into Sinhala, and President of the Hashimi Foundation of Sri Lanka. He elaborated on the intellectual, ethical, and spiritual dimensions of Imam Khomeini’s personality. Referring to Imam Khomeini’s historic letter to Mikhail Gorbachev, he described it as a remarkable example of the Imam’s attention to the spiritual dimension of human life and emphasized the significance of Ghadir and the concept of Wilayah in Islamic thought.

The ceremony concluded with the recitation of a poem in praise of Imam Ali (AS) by Mr. Muhammad Azmeer Ahmad Zubair, which was warmly received by the audience.

Held in a cordial and spiritual atmosphere, the event provided a valuable opportunity to introduce the intellectual, cultural, and political dimensions of Imam Khomeini’s thought and to promote a deeper understanding of the Islamic teachings associated with the Event of Ghadir Khumm among Sri Lankan intellectuals and cultural and religious figures.
