On June 13, 2025, the 36th anniversary of the passing of Imam Khomeini (RA), the revered founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, was commemorated with a ceremony attended by a diverse group of participants, including media representatives, academics, political figures, and supporters of the Islamic Republic, at the Cultural Center of the Embassy of Iran in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The event featured prominent speakers, including Mr. Ebrahim Mehr Aein, Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Dr. Moazzami, Cultural Counselor of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Sri Lanka, Hojjatoleslam Mirfatemii, Head of Al-Mustafa Society in Sri Lanka, Dr. Mathurata Damalankara, a Buddhist monk and member of a human rights organization, and Mr. Mohamed Ziad, a renowned writer and journalist.
Highlights of the Event
Video clips showcasing the life and thoughts of Imam Khomeini were screened, and the speakers elaborated on his multifaceted political, religious, mystical, and national character. Mr. Mehr Aein honored Imam Khomeini as a symbol of resistance and faith, describing him as a leader who transformed history through his devotion to God and the people.
Dr. Moazzami emphasized Imam Khomeini’s multidimensional persona as a jurist, mystic, and philosopher, highlighting his sincerity, courage, support for the oppressed, opposition to arrogance, and promotion of Islamic unity. Hojjatoleslam Mirfatemii, referencing the views of the Supreme Leader of Iran, underscored Imam Khomeini’s sincerity, courage, trust in the people, innovations in jurisprudence and politics, and steadfast anti-imperialist stance.
Mr. Mohamed Ziad portrayed Imam Khomeini as an exceptional leader who, relying on his faith in God, led the Islamic Revolution to victory and established a system based on Islamic laws, emphasizing freedom, justice, and Islamic unity. He noted the Imam’s profound global impact by reviving authentic Islamic teachings and prioritizing culture as the foundation of politics and economics.
Imam Khomeini’s Will and Legacy
The ceremony also highlighted Imam Khomeini’s will addressed to the Muslim world, which calls for Islamic unity, resistance against imperialism, support for oppressed nations such as Palestine and Lebanon, and the promotion of pure Islam. The event aimed to keep Imam Khomeini’s ideals alive and promote his message of unity and justice.
Side Events
On the sidelines of the ceremony, a photo exhibition was held, showcasing images from Imam Khomeini’s life, from before the revolution to his passing and funeral. Books by Imam Khomeini in English, Tamil, and Sinhala were displayed, and photographs of the Imam were distributed among attendees.
